Programs & Special Activities
Music
Band: Sylvan Way Christian Schools has a wonderful band program, wherein students may begin an instrument in the 4th grade and continue through the 8th grade. Students have section lessons with their instrument and then band twice a week. The beginning and intermediate bands perform marvelously for various school functions throughout the year.
Jazz Band: SWCS now has a jazz band! This band is open to Middle School students, teaching young instrumentalists the fundamentals of jazz music in some of its many styles: swing, rock, Latin and reggae.
Physical Education
Our physical education program offers instruction to each class twice a week, 1st through 8th grade, in basic sports, sportsmanship, and physical training. Our emphasis is upon age-appropriate skill development. Also, each spring our students have two weeks of swimming instruction. We also offer team sports for 5th - 8th grade.
Art
Art instruction is conducted by each classroom teacher for at least an hour each week. Emphasis is on drawing and the basic elements of art. In each grade, two artists are studied to familiarize the students with great art and artists.
Achievement Testing
We test all students annually, using the Stanford Achievement Test, through ACSI. Our norms are generally above average in all areas at all grades.
Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI)
Sylvan Way Christian Schools participates in several activities sponsored by ACSI:
- Our teachers attend the regional ACSI Convention in Portland, OR. We stay connected with other Christian schools and experience some valuable input.
- Our students prepare for and are evaluated for the ACSI Speech Meet, Spelling Bee, and Young Authors Celebration. Winners travel to sites around the Puget Sound Area for regional competition.
Science Fair
Each Spring we have a Science Fair, wherein students prepare projects to be adjudicated for presentation and knowledge of scientific principles. Different types of projects are done at each grade level, from optional collections in Kindergarten through 2nd grades, models and demonstrations in 3rd and 4th, to required scientific experiments in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
Writer's Celebration
We love to read and write! We celebrate with a special day each year by having a school-wide day of stimulating activities, and hearing from various authors and artists.
Grandparent's Day
We value the strong family connections we develop with parents and extended family. Each fall we invite grandparents to come and share some time with their grandchildren here at school.
Seasonal Celebrations
- "See You at the Pole" - our school gathers around the flag pole to pray for our country.
- Each year we present two programs, with drama and singing. One during the Christmas season and the second during the spring.
Community Service
Every year each class selects a community service project. During the 2004-2005 school year, these were the ones we participated in:
- Kindergarten: Stuffed Animals for Harrison Hospital
- 1st Grade: Penny Drive for American Red Cross
- 2nd Grade: Kids Bowling for Kids Make a Difference Day
- 3rd Grade: Pop Tops for National Kidney Foundation
- 4th Grade: Jump rope for Heart for American Heart Assoc.
- 5th Grade: Christmas Boxes for Operation Christmas Child
