Cynthia Mathisen - Principal |

Cindy comes to Sylvan Way with ten years of elementary education experience as well as several years of preschool experience. Cindy's first experience with Sylvan Way was as a teacher in our preschool. She has earned her BA in Education and a MS in Education. Her Washington State Professional Teacher Certification holds endorsements in P-3 Early Childhood Education and K-8 Elementary Education. She recently completed the criteria for her Residency Principal Certificate. |

Don is a retired Naval Officer who went on to a second career in education. He holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Teaching. He has taught for many years in the Central Kitsap School District and is a former Vice Principal of Sylvan Way Christian Schools. For the past year Don has been the Pastoral Staff Administrator at Sylvan Way Baptist Church. Don brings a wealth of administrative experience as well as a 27 year association with Sylvan Way Ministries. |

Karen - Interim Daycare Director |

Karen started at Sylvan Way Daycare in 2008. She has 23 years of experience working in Early Childhood Education. Karen is currently working towards her Associates Degree at Olympic College with 40 credits towards an Early Childhood Education degree; in addition she has clocked 157 hours of STARS continuing education and training in the childcare field. Her rapport with parents and children is outstanding. Karen has been the point person as we have worked through our recent licensing challenges. She is capable of tackling the administrative duties of an often busy and demanding daycare office as well as offering warm hugs and lots of love to the littlest attendees of Sylvan Way Christian Daycare. |
| Janet - Preschool Teacher |

Janet joined the SWCS staff in September of 2007. Janet recieved her ECE from Olympic College with recognition of Academic Excellence. She attends SWBC and is involved with the children's ministry. Janet enjoys boating, gardening, camping and sewing. She loves working with young children and sharing her faith with them. You can also find Janet volunteering with the Bremeton Foodline at Thanksgiving time. |

Katti - Preschool Lead Teacher |

Katti joined our preschool staff in September of 2009. Katti brings with her over 10 years of experience in education. She has BA in Early Childhood Education and a Masters in Curriculum Instruction. Katti was born in California, raised in South Carolina and comes to the Bremerton area through her husband’s military assignment. Stepping into her role part way through last year, Katti has shown herself to be an asset to our faculty and a positive influence on the families she has touched. We are pleased to welcome her back this year. |

Shona has over 12 years of experience teaching young children. Shona received her ECE Certificate from Olympic College. Her desire is to share her love for Jesus with the children she teaches. |

Charlene - Kindergarten Teacher & Summer Safari Director |

Charlene has taught Kindergarten at SWCS for over 25 years. She challenges her students with the academic program that she has developed. Kindergarteners learn to read, to work addition and subtraction problems in math and learn about the solar system, dinosaurs and sea life in Science. Charlene graduated with a broad area major in Art and Special Education from Central Washington University. She then returned to college and completed her elementary education requirements to become a Washington State certified teacher. She brings enthusiasm and a love of reading to all of her students at Sylvan Way. |
| Vicky - First Grade Teacher |

Vicky graduated from Central Washington University in Special Education. She enjoys challenging her students in reading, math and science. Every spring her class learns about the life cycle of chickens and they have hands on learning with chicken eggs and an icubator. Vicky enjoys field trips to the Point Defiance Zoo and Central Market with her students where they study related fields. Her students learn First Aide and Bicycle safety each year from a visit from our local Red Cross. Vicky has such a gentle spirit and shows the love of God to her students daily. |

Sally - Second Grade Teacher |

Sally has been teaching at Sylvan Way Christian Schools since 1990. Her love for reading and writing is shared with her students. During the year students study different types of storytelling, such as fairy tales, and fables then create their own stories. Prior to coming to SWCS, Sally taught secondary PE, Health and coached high school volleyball. Sally has a B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Washington and an Elementary Education endorsement from Seattle Pacific University. |
| Patti - Third Grade Teacher |

Patti has taught 30 years in the elementary grades. Patti has a B.A. in Education from Central Washington State College. Previous to Sylvan Way Christian Schools, she taught 3rd and 2nd grades in both private and public schools. Patti received a technology grant from the Gates Foundation in 2001. She introduces her students to Microsoft Power Point and during the year, students prepare presentations for various assignments. During the summer of 2002, Patti had the opportunity to travel to Korea to teach English and in 2004 she traveled to South Africa to instruct teachers. She enjoys encouraging children to do their best and loves to watch them dive into and enjoy learning. Over the summer she participates in two camps: Royal Family Kids Camp, a camp for foster children, where she takes pictures and puts together memory books for each camper and Camp Invention, a day camp held here at our school which gives students the opportunity to enjoy hands-on science, as the camp director. During the school year she co-leads a mentoring/monthly club program for foster children. |

Karen - Fourth & Fifth Grade Teacher |

Karen has been at Sylvan Way Christian since 1990 and has been in a variety of roles from teaching to Vice Principal and is currently our fifth grade teacher. She has a B.A. in Education from Bethel College in Minnesota. Karen enjoys challenging her students, getting them to ask questions that go beyond what is covered in class. She encourages them to explore their independence, trust their past learning and their instincts and become problem solvers. Karen’s hope is that each will be able to be strong in their relationship with the Lord, so they can take a stand for what is right especially as they face adolescence. |
| Denise - Middle School Teacher |

Denise started teaching at Sylvan Way Christian Schools in 2004. She has a degree in Mathematics from LeTourneau College in Texas, and a 5th year teacher credential from Simpson College in California. She has taught every grade from Kindergarten thru 12th grade. In addition, Denise has worked as an engineer and can fly and fix airplanes. Her goal for her students is that they grow in both knowledge of school subjects and God's grace. |

Robin - Middle School Teacher |

Robin teaches Language Arts in Middle School. She received a B.A. in education from Western Washington University in 1987. She also has a 5th year teaching credential from Seattle Pacific University. She has taught 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades, with many years of substitute teaching at all grade levels. Robin enjoys spending time with her family and loves working with the middle school kids. |

Carrie - Spanish Teacher |

Carrie teaches Middle School Spanish. She has her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Phoenix and has been teaching Spanish for 5 years. She enjoys working with Middle School students for the zeal they bring to the classroom and the character building that can be worked in to her teaching time. Outside of school Carrie enjoys gardening, cooking and playing video games with her family. |

Kayleen has been at Sylvan Way Christian Schools since 2001, before that she spent 16 years in the financial accounting field. She has a B.S. in Accounting from Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado. Kayleen and her husband have one daughter who keeps them both very busy. In addition, they serve on the area AWANA Missionary's Ministry Board and assist with area Leader's Conferences, Bible Quizzing and AWANA Games Competition. During the week, she can be found at Key Peninsula Baptist Church serving as AWANA Commander, Church Pianist and Church Treasurer. |

Cynde joined the SWCS staff in 2007. Cynde has a love for cooking and she enjoys sharing her talent with our Middle School students. Cindy helps the Middle School students prepare lunches three days per week. |

Rhonda started teaching at Sylvan Way Christian in 2006. She has a B.A. of Music Education in Instrumental, Orchestral, Choral Conducting, and General Music K-12. She had to learn how to play all band and orchestral instruments but her main instruments are flute, piccolo, harp and piano. Rhonda enjoys hearing a song played for the first time and then working the “bugs” out and then hearing the finished product. It’s then she knows she has taught her students well. Her hope is that each student will enjoy the beautiful gift God gave us called, Music! |

Rob - Athletic Director & Physical Education Teacher |

Rob joined the SWCS staff in 2006. Mr. Shauger brings his love for sports and keeping active to the students of SWCS. Not only is he our Athletic Director and P.E. teacher, Rob works for Harrison Medical Center, 100.7 the Wolf radio station, Baketball Referee for the Special Olympics and Field Organizer for the Kitsap Pumas. Rob was born in San Diego, CA and moved to Washington at the age of 11. In his spare time, he referee's for football, umpires for baseball and fastpitch, plays softball and basketball, enjoys Fantasy sports online and works in his yard. Mr. Shauger has a heart for athletics and enjoys working with children! |

Shelley started working at Sylvan Way Christian School in 2001 as a substitute for the music teacher, grade level teachers, teacher's aides, and has been a teacher's aide and recess supervisor for the last two years. She has a master's degree in church music from SMU, Dallas, TX and a substitute certification from the state of CA. She has taught mostly music to all ages, but particularly enjoys working with children. She and her husband Bob have two children. Along with her husband, they are co-worship team leaders and lead a Bible Study at First Christian Church in Port Orchard. |

Shyrl - Music Teacher |

Shyrl joined our staff as Music Specialist in 2006. She has studied Piano Pedagogy and Vocal Performance and received her Associates Degree in Music from Olympic College. Shyrl loves that God has blessed her with the gift of music. She has been the Music Director at Silverdale United Methodist Church since 1993 and has taught piano and vocal music since the 1980’s. Shyrl leads worship for our school during Chapel, teaches classroom music and leads students in the Christmas and Spring musicals. |
